Pakistan has launched a fuel relief scheme to ease the burden of rising petrol prices on lower-income and middle-class citizens. The programe offers a relief of Rs100 per litre for non-commercial users. This means people who use fuel for reasons not for business can get help.
The biggest winners of this scheme are people who ride motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqi bikes and other two- and three-wheelers. These users can get relief for up to five liters of petrol each week. For those who own cars with engines up to 800cc the relief is based on 30 liters per month. This means the maximum monthly benefit is about Rs2,000 for two- and three-wheelers and Rs3,000 for cars.
The scheme is for non-commercial users. That means it does not include taxis, delivery vehicles or any vehicle used for business. Also one vehicle per person can receive the relief. To get the benefit users need to register with details like their vehicle number and CNIC. A digital Fuel Pass System is being used to manage the subsidy and make sure the help goes to the people.
The Economic Coordination Committee has approved Rs75 billion to run this programe. The government says the goal is to make sure the assistance reaches those who need it most. It also wants to do this in an efficient way so there’s less room, for mistakes or misuse.
For millions of people struggling with transport costs the real question is whether this relief will actually make a difference. Will it save money at the petrol pump to matter? That’s what many citizens are now asking.
